There’s a new piece of art on the wall at The OVRTWN Corner, and if you’ve spent any time in this neighborhood, it’s going to hit different.
On Wednesday, the Miami Heat and South Florida muralist Nate Dee unveiled “Giving Them Their Flowers”—a mural created in celebration of Black History Month and the launch of the Heat’s Art Mural Series. Former Heat center and Overtown Youth Center founder Alonzo Mourning was among those on hand for the unveiling, alongside community members and local leaders. The Heat also used the day to host a meal service at Lotus House Women’s Shelter and run a Jr. Heat basketball clinic at Frederick Douglass Elementary.
But let’s talk about this mural.
At the center, you see an elder’s hands receiving a bouquet of flowers from a younger hand. It’s a simple image, but the meaning runs deep—it’s about how Overtown’s history gets passed down. Not just through books or buildings, but through the people themselves. Through memory, through care, through showing up for each other.
And those flowers? Every single one was chosen on purpose. Periwinkle and morning glory for remembrance and renewal. Red hibiscus for strength and resilience. Yucca for protection and endurance. Lilies for dignity and ancestral presence. It’s not just a bouquet—it’s a living archive.
Look closer and you’ll see hints of an African American flag element wrapping around the hands, connecting the generations. Doves fly overhead—peace, spirit, and the idea that life carries on beyond any one place or moment.
The background is where it gets personal for anyone who knows Overtown. There’s the original Booker T. Washington High School. Musical instruments that nod to the neighborhood’s legendary arts scene—this is the place where “Little Broadway” put Black excellence on stage night after night. And shotgun houses, the first homes, reminding us what Overtown was built on before the expressway came through.
Nate Dee—a South Florida native, FIU grad, and one of the region’s most recognized muralists—brought all of this together. He’s created works for Hard Rock Stadium, Aventura Mall, and the Miami Marlins, but this one is rooted in something specific: a neighborhood that’s still writing its own story.
That’s what makes “Giving Them Their Flowers” feel right. Overtown isn’t a history lesson. It’s a living, breathing community—and this mural says so out loud. What was built here still lives through the people, the stories, and the traditions passed from one generation to the next.
Come see it for yourself at The OVRTWN Corner in Historic Overtown.
